Scale Smarter: Know What Drives Your Profit

Scaling a business without understanding your profit drivers is like building a house without a blueprint. You may add square footage, but is it structurally sound? If you’re unclear on which parts of your business generate the most profit, you risk growing in ways that dilute your success rather than amplifying it.

The most profitable businesses don’t just grow; they grow strategically by doubling down on their strengths. That means identifying which products, services, or client relationships bring in the highest returns and building systems to amplify those. 

I often advise my clients to know what makes them the most money and do more of that.  Sounds pretty simple, right? So often, we complicate our businesses by spreading ourselves too thin and going after too many objectives. Are you a people pleaser? Saying yes to less will serve you better by preserving your time, money, and energy for the things that really matter to your success.

After nailing down profit drivers, a more advanced tactic involves analyzing the key activities performed by the people in your company and eliminating inefficiencies that kill your profit.  Here’s a pic of me telling a bunch of people the same thing at a lunch and learn last year.

The profit equation I teach my coaching and advisory clients is this:

I define PROFITS as sustainability, continued growth and the ability to serve.
